ACD Systems announces ACDSee Free, a free Raw file browser

ACD Systems, the maker of ACDSee Photo Studio, has announced ACDSee Free, a completely free raw file browser and viewer.

It’s important to note that ACDSee Free isn’t a photo editor – it’s only a photo viewer. However, ACD Systems says ACDSee Free is extremely fast, allowing users to view nearly any image, including raw image files.

There’s no need to import images into an ACDSee Free library or file manager. The application points toward your computer drives, allowing you to search, sort, and view ‘thousands of photos in mere seconds.’ Users can search by file name and folder contents and sort photos by image type, file size, capture date and date modified.

In addition to photos, ACDSee Free also displays videos, text documents, and PDFs and can play audio files. You can also set up slideshows to view your images. While there are no photo editing tools in ACDSee Free, you can rotate and flip your images to ensure they appear correctly.

You can use ACDSee Free alongside another one of ACD Systems’ free apps, SendPix. With SendPix, you can share photos and photo albums with friends and family. You can also share images by printing, which is possible within ACDSee Free. You can print single images and generate contact/proof sheets to show your client many images on a single print.

There’s no doubt that ACDSee Free is meant as an entryway to other ACDSee software, such as ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate. ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate allows users use keywords, ratings, color labels and metadata to sort and organize their photos. You can also search and sort images using face detection and facial recognition tools. The biggest difference between ACDSee Free and ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate comes down to editing capabilities. ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate includes full layer-based non-destructive raw image editing.
