New Call of Duty: Warzone Cinematic Ties Vanguard to Verdansk and Black Ops Cold War

0

A new Call of Duty: Warzone cinematic ties the events of Black Ops Cold War with the upcoming Vanguard, further confirming that all of the recent Call of Duty titles share a universe (including the Zombies modes). Notably, it also features a familiar face from Call of Duty: WWII as well as a glimpse at the new Caldera map and aerial combat for Warzone Pacific. Furthermore, the cinematic is titled “Part 1” indicating that another cinematic may reveal more information about how these games tie together at a later date.

The cinematic follows Russel Adler, Alex Mason, Jason Hudson, and Frank Woods after the explosions and subsequent earthquakes in Verdansk. As they search through the city’s underground tunnels, they come across a series of hidden WWII-era Nazi bunkers. In one room, they find retired SOE Captain Carver Butcher; a character first introduced in Call of Duty: WWII back in 2017. Captain Butcher was severely injured during a mission, and also served as the game’s Quartermaster.

Turns out Captain Butcher is actually the founder of Vanguard—the special group of soldiers prominently featured in Call of Duty: Vanguard—and hunted down Nazi soldiers after the events of World War II. Butcher also reveals that Vanguard went to every corner of the earth, starting with the Pacific, to find these leftover Nazi forces, pointing to the island map of Caldera. The video then cuts to what is likely a flashback of the island, with WWII-era propeller planes engaged in a dogfight.

This lines up with what we know about Vanguard‘s storyline, which focuses on the birth of modern special forces. The game focuses on a handful of characters inspired by real-life soldiers from WWII, fighting against the remnants of the Nazi forces across the globe.

This cinematic confirms that not only do Black Ops Cold War, Warzone, and Modern Warfare share a universe, but that Vanguard and WWII are also a part of it as well. It also shows that the shift to Warzone Pacific is not just a random map change, but a narrative one.

Warzone Pacific launches on December 2, along with Season One of Vanguard. Call of Duty: Vanguard launches November 5.
