OnePlus reveals photo details of its 10 Pro smartphone: 10-bit color, RAW+ and a new 150-degree camera

A couple of days after teasing its new OnePlus 10 Pro smartphone, OnePlus has fully unveiled its latest flagship smartphone, and the phone’s camera system isn’t quite as new as we had hoped.

It turns out that the new device will feature a mostly similar triple camera array as the OnePlus 9 Pro. There are some minor differences with the overall camera hardware to discuss. The main, ultra-wide and telephoto cameras all include the same megapixel counts as last year’s model, 48MP, 50MP and 8MP, respectively. However, the ultra-wide camera is new. It includes the ability to switch between a 110-degree field of view and a 150-degree field of view, which is like shooting with a 5mm lens on a full-frame camera. There’s also a new Fisheye Mode if you want to lean into the ultra-wide perspective. If not, AI performs standard distortion correction.

Further, the 2MP monochrome camera that OnePlus claimed improved black and white photography is gone. Based upon user reviews of previous models, this probably isn’t a big loss. The front-facing camera is quite different. It is now 32MP, up from 16MP.

The OnePlus and Hasselblad partnership primarily focused on software with the OnePlus 9 series smartphones. The OnePlus 10 Pro includes improved software, too. The new phone includes what OnePlus calls the ‘Billion Color Solution,’ which OnePlus says allows for Hasselblad’s ‘Natural Color Calibration’ to be applied to over a billion colors. The OnePlus 10 Pro can capture in full 10-bit color, a first for the company. The increased color processing allows the OnePlus 10 Pro to capture 64 times more colors than the OnePlus 9 Pro while simultaneously reducing color banding.

The OnePlus 10 Pro also includes Hasselblad’s second-generation Pro Mode. This allows the smartphone to capture RAW images in 12-bit color with Hasselblad’s Natural Color Solution. This works for all three rear cameras. There’s also a new RAW image format called RAW+ which, after utilizing computational photography technology, results in images with expanded dynamic range and improved noise reduction.

For video, a new Movie Mode has been added to the OnePlus 10 Pro. The new mode allows users to adjust ISO, shutter speed and additional parameters before and during video capture. Movie Mode also supports a new log profile, which should prove useful during post-production.

As we already knew, the OnePlus 10 Pro will feature a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip and a 120Hz OLED screen.

The OnePlus 10 Pro will be released in China on January 11. It will be available in India, Europe and North America later this year.
