Qualcomm shows off world’s first 8K HDR footage shot on a smartphone

Over the years, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chipsets have pushed the boundaries of mobile imaging with a number of world-first features. Now, the company is showing off its next world-first with 8K HDR footage captured on a Xiaomi 12 smartphone with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset inside.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 was the first mobile platform with 4K video capture. It followed that up with its Snapdragon 845 platform, which was the first capable of capturing 4K HDR (10-bit color depth) video. The next step was 8K video, which Qualcomm was the first to do with its Snapdragon 865 platform. Now, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 platform takes it to the next step as the first mobile platform capable of capturing 8K HDR footage. And to show it off, Qualcomm has shared the first snippet of footage as captured on the world’s first smartphone capable of 8K HDR video capture, the Xiaomi 12.

The video showcases a collection of scenes around the west coast of the United States, including shots from California, Oregon and Washington.

You’ll need to view the footage in a compatible browser and you’ll certainly want to watch it in full screen mode on a high-resolution monitor/display for the best look at what Qualcomm’s new mobile chipset has to offer.
