Report: PSVR 2 Will Be Entering Mass Production in China Soon

PlayStation VR for PlayStation 5, currently dubbed PSVR 2, will reportedly be starting mass production soon. As spotted by Reddit, XR hardware analyst Brad Lynch reported the headset would be in production at a Chinese manufacturer known as Goertek and the process is due to begin shortly.

Very little is known about the new PSVR headset. We don’t even know what it looks like or have an official name. Sony confirmed its existence back in February and said it “enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input.” We’re not sure exactly what that means, but there will only be one cable from the headset to the console. Reports have suggested the headset may feature 4K as well as a vibration motor and foveated rendering although they may stick with OLED screens instead of moving to LCD screens.

We know more about the new controllers that are being developed alongside the new PSVR headset, although it’s unlikely these will be produced in the same location. The new orb design is intended to give players a greater degree of freedom of movement and positioning. DualSense features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers will be included, as will finger touch detection. The button layout will also be split between the two controllers, meaning a dedicated controller for each hand.

The new PSVR headset isn’t the only hardware in production at Goertek. Meta’s (Facebook) Project Cambria mixed reality headset will also be in mass production at the location, while they still have a deal to continue producing Pico headsets despite selling the Pico brand to Bytedance last year. They’ll also be making components for Apple AR/VR HMD. Hopefully we’ll hear some news about the upcoming PSVR headset soon as mass production would suggest a release at some point this year.
