Winners and Shortlist for the 2022 Sony World Photography Awards Open Competition

The annual Sony World Photography Awards has announced the winners and shortlisted entries for its 2022 Open Competition. The Open Competition recognizes the best single images submitted in 2021. Over 170,000 images were submitted from around the globe. 100 photographers were shortlisted while 10 overall category winners were selected.

The Open Competition was judged by Newsweek Japan’s Director of Photography, Hideko Kataoka. ‘I enjoyed judging this wide variety of categories from Object to Street Photography….The photographs in this competition each make a coherent visual statement about a situation or particular circumstance in an elegant visual way. As can be seen in many images in the shortlist this year, black and white photography holds a special place in the hearts of many photographers. The simplicity of black and white has the power to distill the content of an image, and direct the viewer’s attention to the subject.’

Each category winner received a Sony camera and other digital imaging equipment. The Open Competition’s overall winner, as well as Student, Youth, and Professional, will be announced on April 12th and those selected will receive an additional $5,000 cash prize. They will also be displayed at an exhibition at London’s Somerset House from April 13th – May 22nd, 2022.

Open Competition, Travel, Winner: ‘Bike with Flowers’ by Thanh Nguyen Phuc (Vietnam)

Image Description: A hundred years ago there were just 36 streets and now there are many more, but the street culture remains strong in Hanoi. There are lots of shops in the main streets but people in the old streets prefer to get serviced by mobile street vendors. I spent a weekend following street vendors and found that they were walking or riding their bikes all day. Here is one of my favourite moments.

Open Competition, Natural World & Wildlife, Winner: ‘Anger Management’ by Scott Wilson (United States)

Open Competition, Motion, Shortlist: ‘Don’t Go!’ by Zhenhuan Zhou (Canada)

Image Description: Bull riding is the most dangerous sport in rodeo. During the ride, cowboys must follow the rules while facing a test of nerves with a tough bull. The rider depends on bullfighters to distract the bull until he is safely out of its range. On this moment in September 2021, one bullfighter is distracting the bull as the rider is being thrown off.

Open Competition, Architecture, Shortlist: ‘Play-building’ by Zeynep Demirhan (Turkey)

Image Description: Play-building.

Open Competition, Travel, Shortlist: ‘Passerby’ by Yang Shu (China)

Image Description: The Mondala Pass is 5,363 metres above sea level, and is the only way to the Kula Kangri mountain. Many pass by here every day, but few people stay for a long time. In December, the temperature dropped to -20°C. I climbed to an altitude of about 5,500 metres to find this angle.

Open Competition, Motion, Shortlist: ‘Untitled’ by Isabela Eseverri (Venezuela)

Image Description: Macaws during their early morning flight in Caracas, Venezuela, on 27 November, 2021. Not autochthonous to the area, these birds have become an invasive species in the last few years – they are a threat to the local bird population, and some even dare to say, a plague.

Open Competition, Landscape, Shortlist: ‘Overflow’ by Luis Manuel Vilariño Lopez (Spain)

Image Description: Magma rises directly from the mantle, driven by gigantic gas bubbles 10-15 metres in diameter, which burst at the surface. As a squall blanketed the Reykjanes peninsula with clouds and heavy rain, I ascended to the base of Geldingadalir, Iceland’s youngest volcano. I flew my drone blindly through the clouds. When I reached the crater the lava was emerging with unusual force, scattering the incandescent rock like oil on a canvas.

Image Description: The sun sets on the main railway station in Częstochowa, Poland.

Open Competition, Lifestyle, Shortlist: ‘The Long Wait’ by Kantaya New (Singapore)

Image Description: In an open-air theatre, in between show times, most of the audience have left. Only two people are seen waiting for the next screening. The guy has adapted well to the wait and is already in dreamland. The girl plays with her phone, and is probably wondering whether to leave or continue waiting.

Open Competition, Architecture, Shortlist: ‘Turbo’ by Junming Chen (Chinese Mainland)

Image Description: There is a lot of amazing architecture in Chongqing, for geographical reasons.
