Sony a7 IV gets new Lossless Compressed Raw sizes, improved Eye AF & more in 1.1 firmware update

Update (August 24, 2022 at 9:40am ET): Sony has removed the downloader due to issues with the firmware update. We have removed the download links for now and have contacted Sony for clarification on why the update has been removed. We will update the article when the links are live again. The article has also been corrected to specify that it’s the new ‘small’ and ‘medium’ Lossless Compressed Raw modes that have been added.

Sony has announced a substantial firmware update for its a7 IV camera that adds a collection of new and improved features, including new small and medium Lossless Compressed Raw image capture sizes.

The most significant addition in firmware version 1.1 for the Sony a7 IV is Lossless Compressed Raw (cRAW) still image capture in two new sizes: small (8.2MP), medium (14.2MP). Sony says its cRAW files are roughly 60–70% smaller than an equivalent Uncompressed Raw image, all while maintaining nearly all of the benefits of Raw images have to offer.

Other features include a new Touch Shutter Function, improved Eye AF accuracy and shutter speed, ISO setting retention for flash photography, improved WiFi connectivity, the ability to record the camera’s serial number to video metadata, the addition of a one-minute Power Save setting and a new setting that will adjust the brightness of the viewfinder display based on ambient brightness. Other smaller bugs and issues have been addressed as well to improve the overall operational stability of the a7 IV.

New Alpha 7 IV Firmware Update Enables Lossless RAW File Options and Improved Accuracy and Operability

SAN DIEGO, CA – August 23, 2022 – Sony Electronics Inc. today announced the v1.1 firmware update for the Alpha 7 IV full-frame mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, adding Lossless Compressed RAW in three sizes for still images, shutter speed and ISO setting retention, touch shutter function, improved Eye AF (autofocus) accuracy and more.

The update adds Lossless Compressed RAW files in S, M and L (small, medium or large) file sizes – a highly requested feature. Selecting L size preserves the same image quality as an uncompressed RAW format while significantly reducing the file size. The M and S sizes record fewer pixels than the L size, providing even smaller RAW file sizes.

Alpha 7 IV v1.1 allows photographers to retain shutter speed and ISO settings for flash photography. This newest update also offers a Touch Shutter Function and improves the accuracy of the Eye AF feature.

Other updates in the Alpha 7 IV v1.1 include:

  • The ability to record the camera’s serial number in the metadata of video files
  • Improved operability of Wi-Fi connections
  • A one-minute setting added to Power Save by Monitor menu
  • The ability to brighten the viewfinder display according to the ambient brightness
  • Improved operational stability of the camera
