Daedalic Entertainment and Nacon have announced The Lord of the Rings: Gollum release date as September 1, 2022. This is specifically for the PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S consoles, with the Switch version arriving later in the year.
How players will influence Gollum’s personality throughout the game
First announced in late March 2019, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is inspired by the character’s behind-the-scenes adventure in J.R.R. Tolkein’s The Fellowship of the Ring, as opposed to the famous movie trilogy directed by Peter Jackson. The game’s story, supported by Middle-earth Enterprises to ensure accuracy to the novels, focuses on Gollum’s obsession with the One Ring, but also adds new scenes to fill out his journey. According to the official Steam entry for this narrative-driven action-adventure, the game will describe parts of his quest that “have not been told in detail yet.”
As Gollum sneaks and climbs his way through locations like the Misty Mountains and Mirkwood, you will need to choose which of his two egos will win: the darker, dangerous side of Gollum or the more trusting and social side of Sméagol. It’s up to you whether the character assassinates enemies in villainous ways or somehow avoids enemies in more creative ways. Your choices will ultimately decide the character’s fate by the end of the game.
The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was originally slated for release in 2021 before being delayed to 2022, with Daedalic Entertainment announcing that it would join forces with publisher Nacon primarily for distribution duties. While it was unclear why the delay was necessary, Daedalic said at the time that it wanted to “meet the expectations of fans of The Lord of the Rings and fully leverage the power of the new generation of consoles.”
