The Rumored ‘Massive PlayStation Remake’ is Expected to be Chrono Cross, but it Won’t be PlayStation Exclusive

0

Last month, rumors appeared about a “massive PlayStation remake” that was due to be revealed during the holiday season. During the latest XboxEra podcast, renowned leaker Nick “Shpeshal_Nick” Baker revealed he had been told the remake is Chrono Cross. Whereas the original game released solely on the PlayStation console, the remake will reportedly be a multiplatform release.

Chrono Cross was one of the games listed in the large GeForce Now internal database leak that occurred in September. While NVidia later said the list was real, they also said the games could have been placeholders and may not even exist. However Baker said he’d heard the PlayStation remake rumor “is about Chrono Cross Remastered” and that the game would not be exclusive to PlayStation:

What else I was told—because everyone’s working under the assumption that it’s a PlayStation exclusive—I’ve been told that it’s not. The only word that was used was “multiplat.” Now, when I hear JRPG and multiplat, I automatically assume PC, PlayStation, Switch, that’s my assumption. That’s not what I was told, that’s just my assumption. All my source said to me was “multiplat.” That’s what they said, they told me it wasn’t PlayStation exclusive.

The rumors began when folk singer Éabha McMahon revealed she had recorded a song for an upcoming “massive” remake of a PlayStation game. She also mentioned she had been working with Irish composer Michael McGlynn (Xenoblade Chronicles 2), his wife, and daughter Ashlyn on the track. When people started looking deeper, they discovered Chrono Cross composer Yasunori Mitsuda had tweeted a picture of himself with Michael and Ashlyn as they prepared to record music remotely, lending more credence to the latest rumors.

First released in 1999, Chrono Cross was set in the same world as Chrono Trigger. The game features a teenage boy called Serge as he finds himself in an alternate world where he died as a child. With the help of more than 40 other playable characters, he travels around the archipelago of El Nido trying to find the truth about why the two worlds separated.

The rumors say the remake is due to be announced this holiday season, which may put it on track for a reveal at The Game Awards 2021 on December 9th. However, remember that all of this is rumor for now, so take it with a grain of salt until it is officially confirmed.
